Overview

The Toddler Community at Sunstone offers a nurturing Montessori environment where children between 16 and 36 months begin their journey toward independence. In these early years, children are driven by a natural desire to do things on their own, and we honor that by creating an environment that supports their growth in both ability and confidence.

Through real, hands-on experiences—caring for themselves, caring for their environment, and participating in daily routines—toddlers learn meaningful life skills while developing coordination, language, and social awareness.

With guidance from trained and loving adults, each child experiences the satisfaction that comes from doing things independently as they lay their foundation for a lifelong love of learning and a strong sense of self.

Beautiful Prepared Environments

Each of our Toddler classrooms is intentionally designed to be both beautiful and functional—a hallmark of the Montessori “prepared environment.” This environment invites exploration, movement, and concentration through order, natural materials, and an atmosphere of calm. Every shelf, tool, and activity is thoughtfully chosen and arranged to fit the child’s size and stage of development, encouraging purposeful engagement and independence. At Sunstone toddlers absorb the rhythm of cooperation and care, discovering that their environment can be a place of harmony, creativity, and self discovery.

Journey to Independence

Children in our Toddler environment explore a range of activities designed to help them develop independence, control of movement, and language development while fostering concentration, and building confidence in their growing abilities. They focus on toilet independence, social interactions, gross and fine motor skills, and practical life activities such as pouring, managing clothing, and preparing snacks. Language blossoms through conversation, songs, and storytelling, enriching communication and self-expression.

In this community of peers, children learn patience, cooperation, and joy in shared accomplishments. As they practice, repeat, and master new skills, they develop not only independence but also a deep sense of belonging and pride in their contributions as they lay their foundation for a lifelong path of learning and self-discovery.

Ready to Move Up

The Toddler environment serves children from 16 months, if they have begun walking, to three years. Children transition to one of our Children’s House classrooms as their independence develops.
