Chromebook Internet Connection Troubleshooting Tips

Check your internet connection after each troubleshooting effort.

Disconnect from current Wi-Fi and reconnect

Your Chromebook saves network information when you connect to a network. To delete that info and disconnect from current Wi-Fi:

  1. Sign in to your Chromebook. 
  2. At the bottom right, select the time.
  3. Select Settings .
  4. In the “Network” section, select Wi-Fi.
  5. Select Known networks.
  6. Find the network you want to forget, then select More (the three vertical dots), select Forget.
  7. Restart your Chromebook and reconnect to a wi-fi network
    1. Sign in to your Chromebook
    2. At the bottom right, select the time
    3. Select Not Connected 

Note: If you see your Wi-Fi network name and a signal strength, your Chromebook is already connected to Wi-Fi.

    1. Turn on Wi-Fi. 
    2. Your Chromebook will automatically look for available networks and show them to you in a list.

Check for updates (this link has a visual step by step walkthrough of the following)

  1. Turn on your Chromebook.
  2. At the bottom right, select the time.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. At the bottom of the left panel, select About Chrome OS.
  5. Under “Google Chrome OS,” you’ll find which version of the Chrome operating system your Chromebook uses.
  6. Select Check for updates.
  7. If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.

Perform a hardware reset (this link has a visual step by step walkthrough of the following)

  1. Turn off your Chromebook.
  2. Press and hold Refresh  + tap Power . 
  3. When your Chromebook starts up, release Refresh .
