Silent Journey and Discovery

Friday Evening – Silent Journey (6:00-7:30 or 8:00pm)

On Friday evening at 6:00 PM, we will begin in the gymnasium with a discussion of our own school experiences as well as the experiences of our children. After that, we will walk together through the classrooms– silently, and without touching – giving you the opportunity to see and absorb the environments where the children spend their days.

We will journey silently through the following classrooms in order and ask you to record your observations in each environment. We will provide everything that you need.

  • Huckleberry —Toddler (16 months to three years)
  • Butterfly—Children’s House (three to six years)
  • Trillium—Lower Elementary (1st through 3rd year)
  • Lupine—Upper Elementary (4th through 6th year)

The Journey takes about an hour. At the end of the Journey, we will return to the gymnasium for reflection and discussion.

In preparation for the Silent Journey, please read over the following guidelines:

  • Please observe true silence, from the moment we leave the gymnasium to when we return.
  • Please refrain from speaking both in the classrooms and while traveling between them.
  • Please silence or, if possible, completely shut off cell phones and other electronic devices.
  • During the Journey, take in impressions with your eyes only. You will have an opportunity to handle materials Saturday during the Discovery.
  • Staff will let you know when it’s time to move to the next environment by ringing a bell.
  • Please take notes for each classroom on the pages we will provide you. This will aid our discussion.

Saturday – Discovery (8:30am-1:00pm)

On Saturday, there will be time for coffee and tea from 9:00-9:15 AM, followed by a brief orientation to the day. We will travel together through the classrooms as follows:

  • Huckleberry—Toddler (16 months to three years)
  • Hummingbird—Children’s House (three to six years)
  • Camassia—Lower Elementary (1st through 3rd year)
  • Lupine—Upper Elementary (4th through 6th year)

This time, classroom materials and instructions will be set out for you to handle and explore, and Sunstone Guides will be available to give lessons and explanations, and guide you through the activities. Please move around the classrooms, engage with the materials that are set out, interact, and ask questions. We cannot emphasize this enough. The more you engage, the more you will gain. We want everyone actively working and having fun! At about 11:30am, we will be back in the gymnasium for reflection and discussion. We will end the day with a written evaluation and close at 12:30-1:00pm.
